Front Differential Fluid Level

I drained the fluid in the front differential of my 4500 yesterday. The owners manual states that it will require 2.1 gallons to be at the proper level. However, after refilling it with approx. 1.5 gallons, I noticed the fluid was nearly to the top of the case. I waited the recommeded 1 hr. before testing the level via the dip stick and the oil level is well over the "fill" mark on the dip stick as indicated in the owners manual.
Could anyone clarify this for me? Should I add the recommended quantity or will it be over filled?

The owners manuals seem to be notorious for inaccurate capacities for front axles. Did you drain it at all 3 drain plugs? There is one in the center section and one in each drop housing. If you didn't drain the drop housings, that could account for some of the difference. If you did drain them, I would try to measure how much you drained out. You should be able to add as much back in as came out. ....
